In my podcast interview with Derek Vreeland on The Biggest Table, our conversation centered around the Lord's Table and how it can and should function as the heart of our formation into the image of Christ.
Derek also mentioned that the church where he serves, Word of Life Church in St. Joseph, MO, will be holding an Election Day Communion service. While I was in Park City, UT, I was able to facilitate a service like this in 2016 and 2020.
The vision behind this is that after we vote, we as a body of believers come together to remember who we are in Christ. We remember that we are called to the politics of Jesus and the cross and not of this world.
As of the publication of the episode (October 8, 2024) we are four weeks away from Eleciton Day. I think there is still time for churches to do a service like this, so I wanted to include some resources for you and your church.
If you find yourself not able to organize a full service in your church, you could also simply gather a few friends and celebrate communion together in the intimacy of your own home.
As Derek mentioned in the episode, this is a service you want carefully scripted as it is all too easy to say something that could be hurtful or cause derision instead of unity.
Underneath the picture you will find a packet with various prayers and options for you to include. I found this packet from Election Day Communion group back in 2016. (They do not seem to be active currently.) Also included is a sample order of service from one of the two services I led in Park City, UT.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to reach out and contact me, and I would be happy to help.
