Get to know Andrew

A former chef, a former pastor interested in all things food and spirituality.

The table has always played a central role in my life. My parents put a premium on us eating together as a family both breakfast and dinner.

When I moved to China after graduating from Biola University with a degree in biblical studies, I began to notice how much time I spent and lingered at the table with other expats. The living room couches were mere feet away, and yet we were all content to sit in uncomfortable dining room chairs.

I began to be haunted by the question, "What is it about food and the table that cause us to linger, relax, and belong?" As important as physical nourishment is, there was something more than just the physical taking place at the table.

A lightbulb went off for me while I was reading Practicing the Resurrection by Eugene Peterson: "The Gospel writers are fond of telling stories of Jesus at meals. The meal was one of their favorite settings for showing Jesus as he revealed himself, talked, worked, and welcomed men and women to him." From that simple sentence, I began noticing just how much food and its related themes kept showing up in the Bible time and time again.

This journey has led me to Talbot Seminary where I received a Masters in Spiritual Formation & Soul Care; it also led me to culinary school so that I could better understand food and flavors.

The journey has not always been easy nor has it been straightforward, but it has been exciting, and continues to lead me into new horizons.
